Survey says Subaru is safest

A new survey by MoneySupermarket has surprisingly found that Subaru drivers are the least likely to make a claim for an "at fault" accident on their car insurance. The perceived boy racer favourite was named as the “safest” non accident bet, while Seat drivers were found to be most likely to claim.

MoneySupermarket analysed over 13 million car insurance quotes run on its website over 12 months, and of the top 35 favourite car brands it found that Subaru drivers made the fewest number of claims for motor accidents, followed by Smart and Fiat drivers.

The survey actually found that Subaru’s were more likely to be driven by men in their thirties and forties who look after their vehicles, rather than younger drivers. Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket, said, "This is a turn up for the motoring books! The Subaru is shedding its image of a car for pure petrol-heads, and is actually being driven by older, safer drivers instead of the younger motoring generation.”

Neil Greig, director of policy at The Institute of Advanced Motorists, said, “From Audi to Volvo, the best drivers take care of their driving and their cars because they know crashes will cost them in terms of higher premiums and ultimately second hand value."

Analysis of car brands revealed that drivers of Seat, Kia and Mini models took the top spots for most likely to make a claim for an at fault accident. Also featuring in the top five were Honda and Mazda drivers.
