The UK car industry had its least productive September in 25 years according to figures released by the , the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The slump can be attributed to not only the COVID-19 situation, but also a fall in US exports and pre-Brexit concerns.

The figures show that British car production is set to fall below 1 million vehicles this year for the first time since 1999.

SMMT CEO Mike Hawes commented, "These figures are yet more grim reading for UK automotive as Coronavirus continues to wreak havoc both at home and in key overseas markets."

The SMMT has also warned that 2021 could be just as tough, if the UK government fails to reach a trade deal with the European Union that allows British-made cars to continue to be exported tariff-free. Mike Hawes said, "With production already strained, the additional blow of 'no deal' would be devastating for the sector, its workers and their families.”
