Could the three point turn be history?

German OE parts supplier ZF, has unveiled a prototype of a new steering module that could put an end to tricky parallel parking and three point turns.

Called the Easy Turn Strut, ZF’s it can reduce a cars turning circle to just 5.7 metres if supported by rear wheel steering, as it allows the front wheels to turn up to 80 degrees.

The system was recently demonstrated on a BMW i3, impressively almost turning on the spot. ZF say the strut is best suited to rear wheel drive electric vehicles which have less front end mechanics. It is thought that this technology could appear on new models in under three years.

Other developers, most notably Hyundai Mobis, are also developing similar concepts.
