It's only been available for one day but already 1,932 new cars bearing the brand new number plate have driven off the forecourt in the last 24 hours.

On the first day alone there have been 164 Nissan Qashqai's, 149 Ford Focus and 136 VW Golf's purchased by enthusiastic new car buyers. This has led to great optomism that the new regristration system is already working. However, we will have to wait for a few weeks yet to see the full effect of the historic change. Meanwhile, industry insiders expect the month to deliver a bumper 6,000 units ensuring the success of the number plate system for July at least.

Ford lead the charge with 337 new cars sold or 17.44% of sales. Hyundai are next with 236 (12.22%), followed by Nissan 235 (12.16 %). Volkswagen come next with 231 units (11.96%) followed by Toyota in fifth - 143 cars sold (7.4%). The top ten list of top sellers are Reanult 91 (4.71%) , Opel 83 (4.3%), Kia 71 (3.67%), Suzuki 68 (3.52%) and SKODA 55 (2.85%).

A quick analysis of these figures suggests that smaller cars are more prominent with the premium brands such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi selling smaller numbers.
