Check your tyres for summer motoring

Tuesday, July 16, 2019

TyreSafe and Ring Automotive, a leading supplier of tyre inflation equipment, are urging motorist to stay safe, cut fuel bills and cut emissions this summer by carrying out regular tyre checks.

Tyre checks can be especially important in the summer, with longer journeys often undertaken. There are two key things to check before travelling:

Firstly the tyre pressure should be correct. Under- or over-inflated tyres can increase stopping distance, weaken the tyre and reduce the surface area between the tyre and road,  leading to an uncomfortable and less safe drive. Drivers also need to remember if a car is more heavily loaded than usual the pressure must be adjusted to compensate for the extra weight.

Secondly, tyre tread should also be checked. Insufficient tread is not only dangerous, it is also illegal and can mean a heavy fine.

Lizzy Sebine, Tyre Care Product Manager at Ring, says, “It’s really simple to check your tyre pressure and tread, and it’ll make a big difference for your holiday. Handling, braking and accelerating are all affected by incorrect tyre pressure and tread depth. We want to make sure motorists understand that by not carrying out basic tyre checks and maintenance, they are putting their safety at risk, as well as increasing their fuel costs and carbon emissions.”

Lizzy also points out that, as well as improving safety, correctly inflated tyres will cut fuel spend and carbon emissions, as this helps the vehicle to run more efficiently.
