From August 2012, all new trucks manufactured in Europe, will have to have factory fitted Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). The move follows a similar rule introduced in February that applies to new cars and light vans. The new regulation is part of a European Commission safety initiative.

    According to EU studies, vehicle drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, all detected vehicles using DRL more clearly and quickly than those equipped with dipped beam headlights. The technology is also said to be more environmentally friendly than normal headlights.

    The move is backed by the Irish Road Safety Authority. It says that DRLs reduces the likelihood of multi-party daytime collisions, therefore helping to save lives and prevent serious injuries.
