Electrical now the most common fault

The latest annual car reliability survey, compiled by What Car? and Warranty Direct, has found that almost a quarter of breakdowns are now due to electrical faults.


23.5% of vehicles in garages for repair are there on account of problems with an electrical systems or subsystems. The next most common fault was found to be steering and suspension issues at 22%.

The survey also ranks car makes according to on the road reliability and looks at types of car that are most prone to failure. Prestige and luxury models were found to give the most troubles, with smaller basic cars the most reliable. In terms of makes, Bentley, Land Rover, and Porsche were found to have the most reliability issues and some of the highest average repair costs.

At the other end of the spectrum Japanese manufacturer took four of the top five reliability places with Honda the most reliable followed by Suzuki, Subaru and Toyota with Hyundai breaking the sequence in third spot. Impressively this is the eighth consecutive year Honda has been out on top.
