With many diesel cars being forced to stay closer to home this year, DPF issues have been a particular problem for garages. This is because in many instances the vehicles have failed to be regularly driven for an uninterrupted period at moderate speed, meaning the filters have not been able to successfully complete their required regeneration process.

Regeneration is vital to stop DPFs becoming clogged with clogged with soot. Vehicle manufacturers have developed different DPF regeneration strategies but essentially the temperature in the DPF has to be increased to the point where soot trapped in the core burns to ash. If this drive cycle does not happen regularly, soot will build up in the DPF.
