Correct installation of Handed Brake Discs

Juratek issued some useful advice on the installation of Handed Brake Discs, where a left and right hand version of the discs need to be fitted for optimum performance. Incorrect installation of discs on vehicles with this requirement, will mean the brake system does not work correctly and may also result in excessive heat leading to brake judder.

The heat generated by friction must be removed quickly during braking to avoid brake fade and rapid brake pad deterioration. Most vehicles come with straight vane discs, but some higher performance vehicles come with directional discs, which have curved or tilted internal cooling vanes.

When the discs rotate at speed, air is pulled from the centre of the disc which improves the cooling efficiency. Thus, there is a left and a right disc supplied by Juratek. Correctly installed, the internal vanes should lean towards the back of the car. Failure to install the discs correctly can result in the discs becoming too hot. If the discs exceed the normal operating temperature hot brake judder can sometimes be the consequence. Further evidence of excessive heat is oxidisation, soot deposits on the hub surface and a blue tint to the braking surface.

Juratek manufacture Handed Brake Discs for many popular BMW vehicles and this is indicated in the Juratek part number with a suffix of L or R.

The complete range of Juratek braking products is distributed in Ireland by Strongline Autoparts.
