Chinese Police make big counterfeit part seizure

Police in China have seized 33,000 counterfeit Toyota and Lexus parts, including airbags and brake components, which were produced in a large-scale manufacturing facility according to the Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). A raid on premises in Guangzhou City also found some 55,000 packages branded in the style of Toyota Genuine Parts, complete with barcodes and serial numbers.

It appears that most of the parts, which represent the equivalent retail value of over $1 million, where destined for the Australian market. Both Ford and General Motors in Australia have reported similar problems with counterfeit parts in recent months.

FCAI CEO Tony Weber said, “While this seizure is shocking, sadly it’s not uncommon and using counterfeit parts, knowingly or otherwise, means you’re taking a huge risk. It offers a clear reminder to consumers that just because they see a branded box, bag or label they shouldn’t assume they’re buying a genuine part.”
