Renault has announced plans to introduce a new entry level EV that should sell for under €20,000 in most European markets. The Electric Twingo will be built in Europe and is intended to compete with lower cost EVs coming in from China.

Renault Group boss Luca de Meo described the electric Twingo, which is due for production in 2026, as a "silver bullet for sustainability mobility."

Renault believe that achieving a low entry cost is possible as smaller dimension will reduce material costs, compared to SUV designs and greater use of software will mean fewer moving parts.

The car is being mainly aimed at more urban environments and the company says has the potential to be purchased for less than €100 per month.

The announcement was made at the Capital Market Day financial event where, Ampere firm, a new standalone company which will design, engineer, manufacture and market EVs as part of the Renault Group was also introduced. This company will play a key role in striving for price parity between current Renault combustion engine cars and EVs.

Although Renault’s price proposals look very attractive, they do not of course budget for Irish VRT, so customers here will no doubt end up paying considerable more.
