One of the product highlights in the recent round of new product introductions from parts specialist febi is a Clock Spring for the airbag on some popular Hyundai and Kia models.

The febi brand and local motor factors may not be what immediately comes to mind when looking for such a part, but this is a prime example of how febi can supply thousands of replacement parts and repair kits that many technicians might assume are only available from dealers. Because the parts are from febi, the fitter also has the assurance of first class quality, a full 3 year guarantee and prices that can generally make a repair or replacement far more economical.

The airbag clock spring in questions is febi 186161, which fits the Hyundai Accent IV (2010 to 2017), i30 II (2011 on ) and the Kia Rio III (2011 to 2017). The spring is designed to provide a constant electrical connection between the vehicle’s wiring loom and the controls that are mounted on the steering column and wheel such as the airbag, horn and infotainment. Within the clock spring housing there is a coiled strip cable that wraps and unwraps as the steering wheel is turned.

Over time the constant left and right rotary movement of the steering wheel, along with climatic variations, causes the wires within the clock spring to fatigue, and eventually, break. One of the most common early indicators of a clock spring failing is the partial or full loss of functionality of any of the controls mounted on the steering wheel or column. While this may not have a significant impact on driving performance, the failure of these controls can be a very serious annoyance to drivers that have become used to using them.

The OE cross references for this item are; Hyundai, 93490-0U010 and Kia, 93490-0U010. The febi part, 186161 is now available from febi stockists nationwide.
