Parts specialist FEBEST has issued some practical guidance on safety critical ball joint components.

Ball joints allow pivoting movement between rigid components of the suspension and steering system. They link suspension arms with the steering knuckle, meanwhile tie rod ends connect steering gear with the steering knuckle, both providing smooth and controlled ride.

Ball joint structure is similar to the human hip joint. It requires grease to keep moving. Both ball joints and tie rod ends feature rubber boots to keep moisture and dirt out. Lubricant is placed under the boot in an amount of no more than 35% of the boot volume. These boots need to be inspected regularly. Once the boot is damaged the ball joint should be replaced. If the boot looks old, but there is no visible tear, it is advisable to replace the boot, which gives the ball joint a second life. Mechanics should follow manufacturer instructions to ensure proper installation and prevent premature failure. Understanding these components helps maintain vehicle safety and performance.

FEBEST offers more than 300 articles in its ball joint range for lower/upper arms and for steering knuckles, as well as steering tie rod ends, and boots separately for both positions. The range covers all vehicle manufacturers with especially comprehensive coverage on Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Peugeot and Citroen models.
