EV accident repair costs dropping but still higher than ICE

Latest data issued by the German Insurance Association (GDV) shows that when it comes to accident repair it is still 15 to 20% more expensive to fix an EV model compared to an equivalent combustion engine model. However, the gap is reducing.

The data shows that while EV repairs are generally more expensive, the difference in price compared to ICE vehicles is dropping, as repair centres and suppliers become more familiar with the challenges of EV. Last year the cost of EV repair claims was 20-25% higher than ICE, while currently the claims cost difference has dropped to 15-20%.

Anja Käfer-Rohrbach, the Deputy General Director for the GDV commented, “With a broader EV model range, workshops, recovery operators, fire departments, and appraisers now have more experience with damaged electric cars.”

Germany currently has some 1.65 million electric vehicles on the road, although this still represents only 3.3% of overall registrations.
