Minister for Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, has announced plans to establish a national centre for electric vehicle technician training in Mullingar.

The new centre will train technicians and students in the repair and maintenance of electric vehicles, including not only cars, but also e-bikes and scooters, electric LCVs and HGVs and Buses.

As yet no site has been designated for the centre, although Longford Westmeath Education Training Board, which will play a role in it development, has established a coordinating office in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Minister Harris said, "As the number of EVs on the road increases, a workforce with the knowledge to fix and properly maintain them will be needed.  It is clear to us we need a dedicated national centre to focus on the delivery of these key skills, while preparing for future technological advances."

Speaking about the news on behalf of SOLAS, the state agency that oversees further education and training sector, CEO, Andrew Brownlee said, "The skills provided by the national centre by Longford-Westmeath Education and Training Board will be essential in supporting the green transition and in realising climate action targets.”

Liz Lavery, Longford Westmeath Education Training Board chief executive, said, “LWETB is delighted and proud to be expanding into this new area and is committed to developing a skilled and knowledgeable workforce that can drive Ireland’s transition to a more eco-friendly future.”
