The febiPLUS range offers timely and convenient solutions to many common issues that garages encounter on a regular basis. One such issue relates to the ignition switch on certain VW group models, identified and solved by the febi product team.

A common problem that affects the VW Golf, Seat Leon and many other models of the Volkswagen and Audi range is the constant running of the engine even when the ignition key is switched to the off position. This is due to wear in the ignition switch which means the engine can only be switched off by physically removing the ignition key from the lock.

The primary function of an ignition switch is to provide an electrical voltage to the starter motor when starting the engine. The vehicle’s key is inserted into the barrel which contains three ignition switch positions. Position one (the vehicle’s accessory position) is for light electrical loads, such as the car audio. The second ignition position activates all other electrical circuit systems. The third position activates the starter motor, when the key is released, and starts the engine - before returning to ignition position two.

If the engine continues running even when the key is switched out of the starting position, technicians should check for the following fault codes: B11A511, B12E512, B12E612. These are short circuit faults and can be conformed using a suitable diagnostic tool.

If these faults are present, then the switch requires replacement. febi offers a competitively priced replacement ignition switch, febiPLUS 172813, which  is manufactured to the latest VAG OE specification. The makes it a highly reliable and convenient repair solution as the product is readily available from local motor factors.

This VW ignition switch is available from febi stockists nationwide.
