Amazon's Zoox unveils autonomous taxi

No driver and no steering wheel. Is this the future of digital ride-hailing services? Global giant Amazon seems to think so, as it has unveiled a new fully autonomous electric vehicle from its self driving start-up company Zoox.

Described as a “robotaxi”, it can carry four passengers at speeds of up to 75 mph and has a battery run time of up to 16 hours. It also has no front or back and can travel in either direction.  Zoox plans to launch an app initially in the cities of San Francisco and Las Vegas to put the new concept to work.

Zoox CEO Aicha Evans recently told Bloomberg Television, “This is really about re-imagining transportation. Not only do we have the capital required, we have the long-term vision.”

The plan is to challenge services such as Uber and Lyft, not just in the USA, but all over the world. The service will not be launched until at least 2022, but vehicles are already being built in California.
