A car developed by the Politecnico University in Milan, has set a new world land speed record for an autonomous vehicle on the Space Shuttle runway at the NASA Space Centre in Florida.

Called the PoliMOVE, the car hit an average speed of 309.3kph or 192mph over two 1 km runs, beating the previous best of 282 kph.

The team earned the right to use the special runway after its success at the Indy Autonomous Challenge in January.

Professor Sergio Savaresi, team leader for Politecnico di Milano, said, “This test run was exhilarating, and we are thrilled with the world record, but we’re also excited by the fact that this data will be made available to all, and the industry will benefit from our work.”
