Reports from Japan suggest that Toyota is moving towards solving the major problems associated with electric vehicle batteries, by introducing new types of solid state batteries.
Currently the two big draw backs of all electric vehicles are that the batteries take too long to charge and their power reduces relatively quickly, which means the cars suffer from a limited range and potential customers are put off by range anxiety.
While traditional technology is improving on these issues all the time, progress is relatively slow. It appears that Toyota is preparing a new range of vehicles for 2022, which will have new solid rather than liquid electrolyte cells. The company says this dramatically increases the speed at which the unit can be charged and makes the battery more stable. The talk is that a full charge could be achieved in as little as three minutes.
If this type of technology can be brought to fruition, it could make all electric vehicles much more appealing to buyers, as well as a growing army of pool car users. It might also mean a new lease of life for fuel filling stations as fast charge facilities.
