Derek Tohill, newly crowned 2013 European RallycrossRX Touring Car Champion was forced to retire from the last round of the competition in Buxtehude, Germany at the weekend, but is already planning exciting developments for next season.
Driving his PartsforCars.ie Fiesta, Derek performed well in the heats and qualifying, but had to retire from the final after a first corner incident. Derek said, “I am very happy I secured the title last weekend. During the final I was pushed by another driver and afterwards I was forced to retire with a damaged car.”
After the four qualification heats Derek was classified second in the intermediate classification and having won semi-final he lined up on the front row for the last TouringCar final of the season before the early race disappointment.
With the 2013 championship concluded Derek Tohill and the team are now focusing on the 2014 season. Derek says, “In 2014 I will race in the SuperCar category. Details still have to be worked out, but the first step is a SuperCar test that has been offered to me, as 2013 TouringCar champion, by the championship promoter.”
This test will see Derek travel to Sweden in October to test drive the VW Polo Mk5 of Swedish SuperCar racer Anton Marklund. The test will take place at Kinnekulle Ring prior to the final round of the Swedish Rallycross Championship.
