Supercar showcases hydrogen benefits

Hydrogen fuel cells were once seen as the future of vehicle propulsion, but the technology seems to have lost ground in recent years. To give hydrogen something of a boost, a new hydrogen fuel cell supercar has now been revealed, complete with ultra futuristic look.

The Hyperion XP-1 is said to have a range of over 1,000 miles of range, a 0-60 acceleration of 2.2 seconds and a top speed of over 220 mph. It has been designed to highlight the advantages of hydrogen technology and Hyperion plans to produce 300 road-going models.

Hyperion says hydrogen represents a better future alternative when compared to battery power or combustion engine cars because they are lighter and hydrogen is more abundant than fossil fuels.

Angelo Kafantaris, CEO of the Orange, California-based Hyperion, says, “What we think is most critical to the industry right now is delivering a message through a product, the Hyperion XP-1, which is a vehicle that is an educational tool to show the world the wonderful benefits of hydrogen. Hyperion has no intention to be only a manufacturer of supercars. The XP-1 is an educational tool, and there will be further models that are more affordable down the line. But primarily we want to build the penultimate version of what a hydrogen vehicle could be, and then explain to the world why, through the car, it was so wonderful.”
