People on their holidays, at home, in bed or at work, far from the M50, have been incorrectly charged the toll, reports the Irish Independent.

Up to 200 people a week using the ring-road will continue to experience problems paying the toll for the foreseeable future, the National Roads Authority (NRA) has admitted. Since August 30, when the toll barriers were removed, motorists using the road have had three payment options. They can purchase an electronic tag, register their car details with eflow.ie or pay as you go.

But one caller to RTE's 'Liveline' said her husband received a bill for using the road on September 5, at 6.35pm. She said he was sitting 250km away in his mother-in-law's kitchen eating dinner at the time.

Apologising for the situation, the NRA said it was impossible to have a 100% accurate system. The mistakes were occurring for a number of reasons, including the incorrect mounting of electronic tags. A spokesman said mistakes were made, "but we have a back-up system -- human beings -- give us a call and we'll clear it up".
