The febiPLUS range often exclusively offers articles to the independent aftermarket that are otherwise only available from Original Equipment and the vehicle manufacturer. A prime example of this is the febiPLUS Article of the Month, febi 172813 an ignition switch that fits a wide range of Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda models.

The original switch is prone to early failure and this is an issue that effects especially the Audi A3, VW Golf, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia and many other models of the Volkswagen group range. The problem sees the constant running of the engine even when the ignition key is switched to the off position. This is due to wear in the ignition switch which means the engine can only be switched off by physically removing the ignition key from the lock.

The primary function of an ignition switch is to provide an electrical voltage to the starter motor when starting the engine. The vehicle’s key is inserted into the barrel (mounted on the steering column) and contains three ignition switch positions. Position one (the vehicle’s accessory position) is for light electrical loads, such as the car audio. The second ignition position activates all other electrical circuit systems. The third position activates the starter motor, when the key is released, and starts the engine, before returning to ignition position two.

If the symptoms described above are present, the following fault codes could be logged in the vehicle’s body control module: B11A511, B12E512, B12E612. These short circuit faults can be accessed using a suitable diagnostic tool.

The ignition switch if faulty can be simply and economically replaced with febiPLUS 172813. It is manufactured to the latest VAG specification, to provide a convenient and reliable repair solution.

The switch and many other febiPLUS parts can be purchased from febi stockists. Full details can be found in the Partsfinder online catalogue.
