EU proposals on safety

New EU vehicle regulation proposals have been made, which are designed to increase safety and reduce green house gases. The EU is also planning to replace the existing system of some 50 directives and 100 amendments governing vehicles, with one overall safety regulation. The proposals include a requirement for new vehicles to have quieter tyres, electronic stability control and tyre-pressure monitors. Advanced emergency brakes and lane-departure warning systems for heavy-duty vehicles are also being considered.

These draft proposals need to be agreed by the European Parliament and individual governments. However, most carmakers are already developing products with these proposals in mind.
