Dún Laoghaire Rathdown council has voted in favour of supporting the installation of infrastructural measures, in the form of public charging facilities for electric vehicles (Ev’s). The proposal by representatives of the electric transport industry to support charging facilities for Eva’s, has been distributed to nearly every County, Town and Borough Council, with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown being the first to take it up.
Green Machines and GreenAer Mobility, have been leading this electric transport campaign. The document that has been distributed to the councils outlines a number of measures that the electric transport industry believes will incentivise a switch to electric vehicles for many consumers. These include the provision of free parking, implementation of designated charging points, access to bus lanes during peak hours and the introduction of new building regulations, to ensure that charging points in car parks are supplied as standard.
Aside from the obvious environmental benefits (zero carbon emissions when driven), an electric vehicle offers long-term financial savings as well. It has very low running costs, compared to their petrol or diesel equivalents, coming in at an average price of €200 per year in electricity.
