Hybrids are now one of the most common form of powertrain on Irish roads, providing a convenient bridging point between traditional combustion engines and fully electric vehicles. This can increase sooting and cause the spark plug to cool down more frequently. Deposits can build up on the insulator nose, which can create a partially conductive, competing pathway. This can result in an inefficient spark or in the worst case, in failure to ignite.

Bosch EVO plugs are designed to combat this issue with excellent cold start performance and are subjected to rigorous cold-start tests. This involves deep cooling to -20 °C and a series of short driving an extended cooling cycles to simulate multiple cold starts.
