BMW has issued a global recall on 1.6 million 3 Series cars manufactured between 2000 and 2006. The recall concerns an airbag problem that has also caused many other car makers to take similar action.

The company says that the move is not the result of any serious reported issues, but is a precaution as other manufacturers using similar systems have reported problems. Dealers will replace the passenger-side front airbags.  It is believed that airbag inflators in systems made by Takata can rupture and mean the system will not function correctly in an accident. The issue is said to be most serious in countries with humid climates.

The problem has already seen millions of recalls issued by other manufacturers including Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating airbags made by Takata, the Tokyo-based supplier of seat belts, airbags, steering wheels and other components last month. This followed six reports of airbags rupturing in Florida and Puerto Rico with three people injured during the incidents.
