Ford Fiesta - Escaping belt The timing belt eating its way through the cover

The owner of this 2007 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi noticed a sound that was not quite right, so he brought it in to have a check. The noise he had heard was only a light rubbing noise, but he did not dismiss it and keep driving. A previous owner had replaced the cam belt, and he was certain that it wasn’t due for changing, having covered just under 50,000 miles in that time.

The timing belt had started slipping off the tensioner, and was now rubbing its way through the cover. It may have been that when the belt was last replaced, the tensioner had not. This is an economy measure that could easily end up costing more money.
