The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has called on the Government to press ahead with the introduction of laws on the mandatory use of daytime running lights before planned European rules come into force in a few years.

CILT president Paul Mallee says, that by acting now prior to EU rules the Irish Government can reduce accidents and deaths on Irish roads. He comments, “At this time of year there is increased danger of road accidents due to poor visibility and treacherous driving conditions. Consequently, we should be doing all in our power to reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities.”

The Road Safety Authority is currently running its own Lights on to Save Lives campaign, to encourage people to voluntarily drive with dipped headlights during the day, an initiative supported by CILT. Mallee wants Irish drivers to embrace this and develop “A culture of ‘Belt on, Lights on’ whereby turning on lights becomes as instinctive as putting on a seatbelt.
