ELVES recently expanded the scope of support which it provides to ATFs in its network with the gifting of a Bridgehill Standard EV Fire Blanket as well as a half day training on how to use it properly.  The fire blanket and supporting training was offered free of charge to all ATFs in the ELVES network that take in EV and hybrid vehicles. 

Training focused on demonstrating how to apply the blanket correctly if needed as a preventative measure. The Bridgehill Standard EV Fire Blanket may also be used on-site by professional fire service crews. 

This new equipment and education initiative was designed to complement and further elevate the knowledge and qualifications of ELVES Network ATFs. Due to high demand, a maximum of two places was allowable per ATF, with 30 training places available overall.  Many participants on the day had already availed of Level 2 Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Awareness training, previously organised by ELVES. 

The preventative fire blanket training was provided by Fire Wise Learning Academy, which is a leading provider of education for emergency services and facilitates, develops and delivers on-line and in-classroom training programs for firefighters, investigators, other emergency responders and partner agencies. 

To assist ATFs with work practice changes necessary because of projected increased volumes of end-of-life EVs, ELVES launched the Electric ELVES Programme in 2018. The programme includes the provision of free EV awareness and dismantling training to ATFs, as well as providing a free collection and recycling service for EV batteries. To date, more than 180 ATF staff have been trained under the programme. The next round of ATF EV awareness and dismantling training will be held in Sligo and Letterkenny in June 2025. 

According to Lee-Jane Eastwood of ELVES, ““With significant industry transition to EVs, ATFs are aware of the need to invest in new skills, equipment and processes necessary to adapt to these changes. Providing Network ATFs with a Bridgehill EV Fire Blanket will mean that all ELVES ATFs are similarly equipped and trained on how to use them. A focus on upskilling ensures the continuance of the valuable services that ATFs provide in End-of-Life Vehicle treatment, as well as benefitting the wider vehicle circularity and recycling sector. We know the provision of this equipment and training is a welcome support to ATFs in the operation of their sites, and particularly, in fire prevention.”
