Waste tyre disposal by reputable collectors only - says TRACS
Share:

TRACS, the Tyre Recovery Activity Compliance Scheme, is reminding all those in the tyre supply chain, to be vigilant in the management of their tyre waste for 2011. Holders of waste tyres must deal ONLY with reputable contractors.

Out of sight does not mean out of mind. All waste must be managed responsibly, even after it as been collected and removed from a business premises. Compliance with the tyre regulations is mandatory for all economic operators involved in the tyre supply chain.

According to Fiacra Quinn, Director of TRACS, “There is an onus on all holders of waste tyres in the tyre industry, no matter what the involvement or investment level, to make a conscious commercial decision to ensure that any waste which is produced or passed on as a result of the business process is properly managed”.

“Even those not involved in replacement fitting must make an effort to know the final destination of their tyre waste. This is done best simply by asking what happens to the waste and how is it treated.  A recovery certificate may just show that the waste is collected by a reputable collector; however, we must question what happens after that.  It is also in the best interests of retailers to be able to demonstrate responsible management to customers – while many final users are price conscious, many more are environmentally aware”.

TRACS has had a major influence on changing industry attitudes to managing tyre waste since its inception in 2008. TRACS currently records over 90% of all tyres imported and supplied in Ireland and 64% of tyres retailed, while waste collectors who are members of TRACS report over 72% collection of total units supplied on to the market.

2011 will see TRACS prioritising behavioural change with respect to how producers, importers and retailers view and deal with the tyre waste created as a result of their activities.
