Montreal may prove to be a watershed in the 2022 Formula 1 Championship as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen opens up a 46 point gap on his nearest rival - team mate Sergio Perez.

In wet conditions the event was a very close affair with Verstappen narrowly claiming his sixth victory of the season after withstanding pressure from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The reigning world champ crossed the line less than one second ahead of the Spaniard and extends his championship lead to 175 points.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who has had a nightmare season so far, completed the podium positions.

Hamilton’s teammate George Russell finished fourth, while championship contender Charles Leclerc recovered to fifth for Ferrari, after starting 19th due to a power unit penalty.

Perez failed to add to his points when he  retired from the race with mechanical problems.

Formula 1 returns for the British Grand Prix on July 3.
