UK repair volumes fall

A recent UK survey has provided official confirmation that the volume of work being put through bodyshops has dropped for the third consecutive year.

The study was carried out by the ABP Club (Auto Body Professionals) and found that 81% of respondents reported a decrease in work volume for the first quarter of 2009 when compared to 2008 figures. In previous years 63% had reported a first quarter decline in 2008 and 62% in 2007.

Only 11% of survey respondents reported increased volume for this year, with 8% saying they were unchanged. Although this survey only covers UK bodyshops, anecdotal evidence would seem to indicate a similar picture in Ireland.

The main reason for the declining volume has been attributed to more total write-offs, due in part to falling used car values. Lower traffic volumes due to the economic downturn and accident avoidance technology have also played a part.
