Workshop equipment specialist Tech ‘n’ Tools has provided some useful advice for garages to consider when selecting a tyre changer.

Tech ‘n’ Tools experts say there are some key criteria that users need to consider before they invest in a tyre changer to ensure they get the best equipment for their specific circumstances.

The first point to keep in mind is whether the changer will be used intensively, such as in a trye replacement shop, or more occasionally such as in service and repair garages. The tyre dimensions that are likely to be used also need to be carefully considered, especially if commercial vehicle applications may be involved.

Garages should also consider whether they should also install a wheel lift assistant close to the changer. Wheels and tyres can be very heavy and repetitive lifting of such items can cause Musculoskeletal disorders.

A further consideration is the requirement of a third arm. This is an essential support for mounting and dismounting run-flat tyres and extends the range of action of the tyre change significantly. Car manufacturers, such as BMW and tyre manufacturers, including Michelin, Dunlop and GoodYear, are encouraging more and more of these new reinforced sidewall tyres because they do not require the vehicle to be immediately immobilized in the event of a puncture. The third arm is then used as a reinforcement to get these very stiff wheels out of the rim groove without damaging them.

The last point of consideration from the Tech ‘n’ Tools experts is whether the changer should be automatic or semi-automatic. With a semi-automatic unit, the main column stays in its position and only the arm rotates sideways which means the equipment requires less working space.

With an automatic unit, the arm works by a pneumatic system that makes it tilt backwards by pressing the pedal. It allows the technicians to automatically centre the wheel. This makes it more suitable for frequent use, such as a tyre specialist, as it requires less operative effort and the auto centring process retains the settings for all 4 wheels, saving significant time.
