Steaming to a new world record

A team including the grandson of speed record breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell, has broken the world land speed record for the fastest steam powered car. With a speed a fraction under 140mph, the steam car team has smashed a record that has stood for more than 100 years.

Driven by Charles Burnett III the 25ft steam car actually reached 151 mph. Although its average recorded speed was less, it was still enough to beat the previous record of 127 mph, set by American, Fred Marriott, driving a Stanley steamer at Daytona Beach in 1906.
