SIMI has called on its members in the Motor Industry, to support the Lisbon Treaty in the forthcoming referendum and encourages others within the industry to do the same.
SIMI’s Director General Alan Nolan said that a ‘Yes’ vote was imperative to the recovery of the Irish economy and highlighted the importance of European membership to the Irish Motor Industry.
Mr Nolan said, “Our accession to the EU freed our industry from past protectionist regulations and widened trade in the industry, leading to increased employment. EU directives have meant substantial improvements in vehicle safety and environmental initiatives that we have all seen the benefits of.”
Mr. Nolan stated that maintaining Ireland’s position at the “heart of Europe” will be vital in ensuring the economy’s swift recovery.
He added: “The crisis in our economy has devastated the Motor Industry. Operating within a European single market with a stable currency, freedom of movement and support from the European Central Bank are key factors that will contribute to our recovery. Support from Europe is vital for our Industry but we cannot expect the same support if we don’t vote ‘Yes.’
