The 2016 Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Championship season gets under way at Mondello Park this Sunday, March 6th, with an impressive line-up and a new championship sponsor.

Having struggled for a number of years to attract entries to the series the Irish Rallycross Committee's hard work over the winter months looks to have worked, with entries on the up and the addition of 'Parts for Cars' as championship sponsor.

The Parts for Cars Irish Rallycross Championship season opener will see seventy drivers compete for the overall and class victories. A strong line-up of six Class 1 Supercars will more than likely produce the overall winner with a number of former champions set to contest this division. A pair of Mitsubishi Evo's for Noel Greene and David Dempsey will take on three Fiesta Supercars driven by former European Rallycross Champion Derek Tohill, Thomas O'Raffery and Declan Kelly, and the lone Subaru Impreza of Michael Morris.

The two wheel drive division has seen a big upsurge in interest with seventeen entries, the largest group being the seven car, over 2000cc class. Defending champion Willie Coyne will once again drive his Corsa in the up to 2000cc class but will have to work hard to retain his title against such strong opposition.

Continuing the theme of increased entries is the Stockhatch Division with its two classes, 8-valve and 16-valve managing seventeen entries between them. The Fiesta Championship which was added to the line-up in 2015 continues to prove popular and thirteen cars will take to the track for the opening round. The remaining entries will be made up of Junior Rallycross drivers and the Rallycar class.

Sunday's event will follow the tried and tested format of at least three runs of heats followed by the finals. Each drivers fastest times from the heats will determine the line -up for the finals and this is where the all important championship points will be at stake.

Admission to Sunday's event is just €12.50 for adults with accompanied under 16's admitted free.
