GM's UK arm Vauxhall, has recently completed a survey on consumer awareness on accident repair issues. The main finding, which may come as little surprise to independent Irish bodyshops, is that there is a serious lack of awareness when it comes to consumer choice about where to get a repair done.
Most motorists do not know that it is their right to choose where their vehicle is repaired and assume that they have to automatically go with their insurers' choice of repairer. Of 1,000 drivers surveyed, only 47% of 18-24 year-olds, and 39% of 25-34 year-olds were aware that they could chose where to get a repair carried out. However, as drivers get more experienced it seems that they do become aware of having a free choice of bodyshop, with 65% of over 55s aware of the fact.
Interestingly, only 21% of those in the survey said they would actually choose the repairer recommended by the insurance company as their first preference. Many said they would prefer a specialist in their particular make, while others said they would prefer to use a local bodyshop based on personal recommendation.
Motorists also expressed concerns that failing to use an insurance company approved repairer, would in some way delay the claim or increase their personal cost.
The survey provides further evidence about the lack of knowledge of UK and Irish motorists when it comes to accident repair choice. It also highlights the need for bodyshops to communicate effectively with potential customers, to make sure that they do not totally lose out when it comes to insurance work.
