Two motor insurance providers in Ireland, Aviva and Allianz have decided to withdraw cover for new customers of car that are over fifteen years old.

In a statement issue by Aviva, they say that their recent decision not to provide a new business quote for cars 14 years or older is based on our own claims experience for this segment.  The statement claims that by not taking on more of this risk type, they are protecting their broader customer base and their ability to offer sustainable and competitive motor insurance premiums in Ireland.

“As a responsible insurer, we have an obligation to take account of our claims and underwriting experience to ensure we are there to protect our customers in the long term.  We constantly review the performance of our policies and adjust rates and our acceptance criteria according to claims experience,” according to he Aviva statement.

“It’s important to point out that anybody currently insured with Aviva who has an older car will continue to be insured by us and any Aviva customers who decide to  buy an older car will also continue be covered by us,” it continues.

In conclusion the statement says that they endeavour to provide consumers with competitive products and premiums across our broad product range.
“We operate in a competitive environment and accept that we cannot guarantee to provide the lowest premium for all potential customers or be in a position to quote for all risk types.

“We continually review our rating and acceptance criteria to keep rating increases to a minimum and remain competitive in the market while offering products to the majority of the motoring customers in Ireland.  This is reflected in our position as one of Ireland’s largest motor insurers.”
