A recent study by UK website Motoring.co.uk has revealed that many car manufacturers hold only a small amount of data on customers with vehicles that are more than three or four years old, presenting some significant opportunities for independent garages. The research shows that this is especially true where a car changes ownership.
Speaking about the research, Chris Green, Sales and Media Director of Motoring, said, “Our study has shown that many cars disappear off the OEM and dealer radar once they get to three years and older. We were very surprised by the massive shortfall in manufacturers’ data. This is not the problem of just one manufacturer rather it is an industry-wide malaise.”
The study speaks of “orphan” cars where the present owner has lost contact with the car maker and the original dealer. It also highlights how car makers and dealers continue to focus on in-warranty vehicles when it comes to aftersales, opening up significant business opportunities for progressive independent service and repair outlets.
