Leaking oil is a major headache for motorists and garages alike and is unfortunately all too common after a vehicle service where a high level of care has not been taken. Filter distributor HELLA Ireland has issued some sound advice to technicians on avoiding leaks when changing an oil filter.

The main seals of "Spin-On" filters are designed to endure high pressure and temperature fluctuations during their working life. This can cause these seals to stick to the sealing surface of the engine block or filter housing when the old filter is removed. HELLA says that if a technician does not thoroughly check that the old filter seal has been removed completely and the surface is clean and clear, problems can occur. If a new filter is installed on top of the old seal a serious oil leak or even filter detachment can result.

Checking that the old seal is attached to the old filter during routine filter changes can prevent leaks, mess and potential engine damage.

HELLA Ireland offers a complete range of replacement oil filters including filters from the renowned Hengst brand.
