The revised environmental regulations covering bodyshop operations are now in place and are being enforced by local authorities. Certification Europe has been appointed as the interim assessor and the EPA is encouraging all bodyshops whose certificates are due to expire shortly to undergo their assessment with Certification Europe and get recertified in time so that they are in a position to take advantage of the extended period of certification up to 30th September 2016.

In general the technical requirements imposed on bodyshops have not changed significantly, so compliant operators should not have to adapt the way they work in order to ensure they are complying with the new regulations. One important point to note is that the regulations now require bodyshops to display their certificate at their premises, and it is an offence under the regulations not to do so.  All bodyshops should therefore arrange to have their certificate displayed in a prominent position as soon as possible.

The EPA is now working on identifying the best approach for the development of a panel of new assessors in advance of the September 30th deadline. They aim to develop a robust criteria for entry onto this panel to ensure that the quality of the inspections is high. The EPA is also in the process of developing a code of conduct, training documentation and inspection templates for assessors. They say they are also considering the development of a centralised IT system to manage the assessment and certification process.

Best practice guidelines for bodyshops operators are also in the process of being updated and a Frequently Asked Questions section will shortly be added to the EPA website (www.decopaints.ie) to reflect common queries. The EPA say other news and information will be put on this website, including information for those interested in being part of the panel of assessors.  In the meantime the National Environmental Complaints Line (NECL) remains in operation and bodyshops and motor factors are encouraged to make complaints in relation to non-compliant activities. The number for this line is 1850 365 121.
