It is an idea that cuts costs, encourages a healthy lifestyle and offers environmental benefits, but whether it will catch on with Irish car dealers and garages remains to be seen. The courtesy bicycle is a new innovation being offered by a Yorkshire based Volvo dealer and is apparently being very well received.

Clive Brook Volvo, gives customers the option to borrow a bicycle instead of a courtesy car when their own car is in for service or repair. Staff at the company’s aftersales department, had noticed that some customers brought bikes with them when dropping off their cars and thought that having courtesy bikes on offer could be a winner.

Managing Director Clive Brook says, “It’s cheaper from a supply and insurance point of view, but it is also cheaper for customers, as there is no need to fill a bicycle up with petrol.” He added “there are also significant environmental and health benefits, so all in all we think it’s a great idea.”
