The Schaeffler team was out in force at Mechanex and had a constant flow of visitors at its bright stand.  As well has showcasing many of its new and emerging technologies the leading OE supplier was also demonstrating how it also specialises in developing time saving and practical solutions for problems that garages are encountering on a regular basis.

A good example of this was on display from the INA brand, concerning timing belt tensioner stud issues on the VAG 2.0 TDi engine. This is a popular power unit that features on models such as the Audi A3, A4 and A6, VW Golf and Passat, as well as Seat and Skoda models. The Schaeffler technical team has found that feedback from garages indicates there can be a serious issue with these studs. VAG recommends replacement of the stud at the tooth belt service change interval of 80,000 miles or five years. As such the stud is included in the aftermarket kit.

Extreme caution is required when removing the stud to ensure excess aluminium is not pulled out in the threads. If this happens, the treaded stud hole needs to be carefully repaired so that the new stud can be installed in line with the original, otherwise it can create resonance in the tensioner caused by misalignment. This could potentially lead to vibration that makes the stud shear and results in serious engine damage.

When installing a new stud it is essential that the recommenced manufacturer torque settings are adhered to. When a "torque to yield” stud is being replaced a calibrated torque wrench must be used. When torqued correctly the M8 to M10 stud thread must be flush or just below the surface of the cylinder head.

To assist with this procedure the Schaeffler technical team have now developed a simple new tool that makes the stud adjustment straight forward and can save a great deal of time and inconvenience. This will be available from INA stockists shortly.
