CAT thefts on the rise as precious metal prices soar

Global uncertainty and volatility in raw material markets, is likely to impact on aftermarket prices in the coming months, with catalytic converters being one area under particular pressure.

Platinum group metals (PGMs), rhodium, palladium, and platinum are key elements within catalytic converter production. Rhodium is the most expensive commodity, effectively ten times the price of gold, while palladium is already up 15% year to date and platinum is up 10% since January.

Aftermarket producer, BM Catalysts says that, “PGMs make up to 90% of the total production cost of a catalytic converter, so pricing is therefore directly tied to the fluctuating value of these essential raw materials.”

As well as impacting replacement component prices, a knock-on effect of the price rises in PGMs is an increase in criminal activity surrounding these components. Theft from vehicles, especially hybrids are on the rise and both the motor trade and motorist are warned to be vigilant.

Almost all petrol and diesel cars now have catalytic converters, but certain models appear to be more targeted by thieves. Cats are exposed under the vehicle, so SUVs are often susceptible because they have higher clearance with easier access. Also criminal gangs target hybrid vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius, as their catalytic converters are said to be less corroded.

Replacing these components is expensive, especially as thieves may often damage pipe-work during removal. Certain practical steps can be taken by motorists and the motor trade to avoid cat theft from vehicles.

Drivers should try to park in a well lit and overlooked location and avoid parking half on the road and half on the kerb as this gives thieves easier access. It is also suggested that drivers vary overnight parking spots, as thieves may monitor certain cars.

Garages should make a point of securing vulnerable vehicles in a locked workshop overnight, which is alarm protected. Having effective CCTV is also known to deter potential thieves.

Garages can also offer customers theft prevention measures. These include:
  • Offering a professional cat marking service. This means stolen cats are traceable and window stickers can be supplied to deter thieves.
  • Fitting cat-locks or cat-cages.
  • Fitting vehicle tilt alarms.
