febi bilstein has issued some vital advice to garages regarding the importance of replacing related components when replacing timing chains.

Engine timing components are essential to the safety and performance of the vehicle. For a vehicle to be fully efficient the engine timing system must synchronize with the components surrounding it.

With increased rates of compression in the combustion chamber, high pressure injection systems and higher torque increase the stress to which engine components are exposed to. The timing chain controls the timing of the vehicles engine valves, by connecting the crankshaft to the camshaft, which in turn controls the opening and closing of the piston valves in order for combustion to occur.

In modern engines all the components that are directly involved in the timing process have to be checked in addition to the timing chain. It is crucial that the timing chain is replaced at regular intervals as recommended by the manufacturer. When fitting a timing chain it is strongly recommended to replace these related components, this will ensure the chain will work correctly its entire service life.

There can be severe consequences from the effects of a worn or broken timing chain. A malfunctioning timing chain could potentially damage inlet and exhaust valves, which will reduce power and even cause complete engine failure. If the chain completely breaks, the crankshaft will not connect to the camshaft, therefore the camshaft will no longer open and close the valves, and consequently the engine will not function.

Also the other components surrounding the timing chain if worn or damaged can also affect the efficiency of the overall engine timing system.

febi bilstein’s engineering experience and expertise can help technicians ensure that they have the confidence in the parts needed to service and repair the engine timing system correctly. To ensure a long engine life, all components of the timing chain kit should be replaced. In addition to timing chains, febi supplies chains and sliding rails as individual parts. febi timing chain kits are manufactured to OE specification and use original IWIS timing chains, to guarantee quality.
