If you thought the roads were getting a little more colourful as more vibrant vehicle shades replace silvers and greys then you would be right.

Blue has overtaken silver as the most popular car colour choice according to a poll of 25,810 drivers carried out by AA Populus. 21% of respondents voted for blue as their preferred colour against 19% for silver, 18% for black and 14% for red.

Black topped the poll for younger drivers between 18 and 24, while silver was still the first choice for over 65s.

Respondents were asked, “If you were given a free choice as regards the colour of your next car which of the following would you choose?” Preference for silver dropped from 29% in 2013 to 19% in 2015. Red and white both increased significantly in the year on year shares while the percentage choosing blue actually dropped slightly from 23% to 21% but this was still enough to make it the top colour.
