Rising car thefts causing major concerns
Share:

National media reports suggest that car thefts were a growing problem in January with up to 20 cars stolen on some days. The thefts appear to be from two main sources, with both joy riders and organised crime gangs involved.

In the case of joy riders, the cars are often abandoned and later recovered, although some are burnt out by the thieves. It also appears that Japanese imported vehicles are being especially targeted as these generally have no immobilisers. The problem appears especially prevalent in parts of Dublin, but is also on the increase in other major cities.

Gardaí are advising owners of Japanese imported cars to put in place another visible layer of security, such as a steering lock or chain to deter potential thieves.

The other concern is that organised crime gangs are also increasingly active, targeting mainly high end vehicles which are often stolen and broken up for parts which are shipped to Russia. Sanctions, due to the war in Ukraine, have created a parts shortage in Russia, making this business more lucrative. Reports suggest that an organised crime gang based in Lithuania is supplying Russian sources with parts and is very active in Ireland. German marques such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes appear particularly at risk, with air-bags, bonnets and doors in high demand.
