NCT stats show 50% failure rate in 2024

Statistics for 2024 show that around 50% of vehicles failed the NCT test last year, with 875,901 failures of the 1,732,095 vehicles tested. 


Figures compiled by cartakeback.ie also show that of test centres across Ireland, Cavan had the highest falure rate at 61%, folwwed by Athlone (59%) and Carrick-on-Shannon (58%).

The top five reasons for failure were; steering and suspension (15%), lighting and electrical (14.2%),  side slip test (12.3%), wheels and tyres (9.9%) and brakes (9.5%). 

Topping the failure rate by manufacturers was Chevrolet (72%), Daihatsu (63%) and Chrysler (62%). Meanwhile at the other end of the scale MG became the manufacturer most likely to pass with a 73% success rate, ahead of last year’s leader Porsche on 63%.
