The oil level in any gearbox should be checked at regular intervals. As some vehicles are no longer equipped with a gearbox dipstick, a mechanic has to purchase one to use as a tool on these gearboxs. For this Mercedes 5-speed automatic transmission (722.6), febi supplies a dipstick and a new locking pin to re-secure the cover after the level has been checked. Febi also describe the correct procedure to check the level in this gearbox.

Things to Consider
• Oil dipsticks provided by replacement part suppliers like febi offer a remedy for this. However, there are a variety of things to consider:
• The vehicle must be positioned horizontally on its wheels.
• The filling tube is located in the engine compartment.
• The end cap of the filling tube is safeguarded against accidental opening. Before measurement, the plate of the locking pin must be broken off with a proper tool (Fig. 1).
• The locking pin can now be removed and the end cap loosened.
• When filling with oil, make sure that approx. 5 liters are initially poured in during the oil change before starting the engine. The engine should be started and run for a short time while parked (in gear “P”).
• Thereafter briefly shift through the gears several times while idling. Afterwards, shift back to the park position (gear “P”).
• The gear oil level during a cold state has to be between the minimum and maximum measuring range of 25 ºC (see Fig. 2). If necessary, the oil level should be corrected and measured again.
• When refilling, the remaining oil should be poured in.
ATTENTION: While checking the oil level, the dipstick must be inserted into the filling tube all the way to the end point. Since the 5-speed automatic transmission is used in various Mercedes-Benz models, the filling tube has different lengths. Therefore it is possible that a portion of the rod sticks out of the tube even though the bottom of the transmission has already been reached.
• The dipstick must be removed after measuring the oil level. The sealing cap can be secured with a new locking pin (also available from many replacement part suppliers).
